3.4 Design Calculation
In any Engineering project, there is always the need to design so as to be able to calculate the functional requirement of each various components so as to avoid failure of the members. Among the components that need to be design and calculated are: volume of the hopper, pulley and shaft designs.
3.4.1 Power Requirement
The machine is design for available power input of power input unit of 5.0 horse power. (electric motor). The available power for ensilaging using 80% assumed efficiency is calculated as 3kW using the expression.
η = po
pix100
where Po is power output and Pi is power input.
3.4.2 Hopper design
The hopper is constructed in a cuboid shape and its volume is L*B*H i.e
V= L*B*L
Where, Height = H = 300mm
Length = L = 700mm
Breadth =B =500mm
V= 700 x500 x 300=105,000,000mm3
V= 1.05m3
3.4.3 Pulley Design
Pulley is a mechanical element that transmit power from one point to another wherever belt is used in transmission.
To determine pulley diameter with a motor at 1500rpm using
N1D1 = N2D2
Where
N1 = Speed of the electric motor = 1440
N2 = Speed of the cutting pulley = 1440
D1 = Diameter of the electric motor = 0.05m
D2 = Diameter of the cutting pulley =?
N1D1 = N2D2
1500 x 0.05 = 1400 x D2
D2= 0.054m or 54mm
Center to center distance of the pulley is a parameter that helps to determine the position of the cutting machine of the cutting machine pulley from the elective motor pulley.
Computing of centre to centre distance is as follows
C = ∆ + d + d Gupta (1989)
2
54 + 50 + 50
2
= 52 + 50
= 102mm
3.4.4 Belt Design

CHAPTER ONE - [ Total Page(s): 2 ]CHAPTER ONEINTRODUCTION1.1 Preamble Animal feedstuff is a very importance aspect of livestock husbandry as it is a major limiting factor in the rearing of animal to meet the increasing demand for animal protein, milk, hides and skill and other sub-Saharan African countries for the nomadic fulanis and pastoralist to allow the animal graze freely in the fields, in most cases after harvest (Umanna and Asishi, 1988; 1985.In some cases the animal rearers collect the crop residues home to feed t ... CHAPTER TWO - [ Total Page(s): 4 ]Principle of Forage ChopperForage chopper is a size reduction process which can be done by pushing or forcing a thin sharp knife through the material to be chopper. When forage crop are used as feeds for animals, size of the fodder (forage) must be reduced as much as possible to aid proper feeding and palatabilityThe grinding performance and physical properties of wheat, barley straw, corn stove and switch grass were studied by (main at al., 2004). They showed that switch grass had highest speci ... Continue reading---
