This study investigated the availability and utilization of computers in teaching and learning of Business Studies in Public Secondary Schools in Kajola Local Government, Oyo State. Four research questions were raised and inferential statistics of frequency counts and percentage was used to analysed the results of the findings, and they are discussed as follows:
Table 2 showed that 97.0% which represent the majority of the respondents pointed out that the computers in schools are not enough and available for use in most of the schools. The researcher is of the opinion that the teachers and students do not use computers to teach and learn Business Studies in public secondary schools in Kajola Local Government, Oyo State. This means that, the teachers and students cannot be helped to break out of the walls of the classroom to share and have access to all the wonderful information and experience that is now possible and the result of this findings contradicts the opinion of Candau, Hannafin, Doherty, Judge, Kum & Yost (2003) that access to computers can ignite teachers and students thoughts and eventually move them towards a better teaching and learning experience.
Table 3 showed that computers were not used by Business Studies teachers and students for drilling and practice or tutorial instructions, promoting writing and language skills and learning of programming languages as agreed upon by the majority of the respondents (68.0%). This is made possible, since no enough/ inadequate availability of computers for use in teaching and learning of Business Studies in Public Secondary School in Kajola Local Government, Oyo State. Meaning that the technology had not been integrated in the teaching of Business Studies. The turn of events in this study became surprising because researchers such as Willoughby & Woods (2008), Smerdon (2000) saw that computer use in the classroom improves the teaching and learning environment to great heights.
Table 4 revealed that 87.0% of the respondents strongly agree that they would enjoy such a class environment when computers are used during teaching and learning of Business Studies. This means that, the teachers and students when use computer to teach and learn Business Studies could improve their motivation due to its novelty as supported by Mann (2006) who agrees that, using computer in teaching can enhance teachers and students achievement, pointed out that computers do assist in improving students’ and teachers’ motivation due to among other things. Because computers provide what textbooks cannot provide in all subjects Business Studies included.
Table 5 revealed that 93.0% of the respondents pointed out that they faced the major challenges of teachers and learners prepardness, lack/ inadequate supply of computers, lack of internet facilities, hardware and software costs and lack of e-learning content. This means that the teachers and students need enough knowledge of computer, so that the teachers and students can feel more confident to use computer to teach and learn Business Studies. Kiarie (2014) lamented that educators constantly need to update their technological skills in order to use this technology effectively. This constant change can make teachers and students feel like perpetual novices.
