Interpretation of Grain Size Analysis
The graphical representation of the results of the grain size analysis (Fig. ) of soil sample gave an indication that sand predominates with percentage composition of 43%, of sand, 30% of silt, clay of 25%, and gravel making up 2% and thus is silty sand,
The percentage compositions of the grain sizes sample shows that the grain sizes are not evenly distributed and this suggests a poor grading. The lateritic soil sample are classified as group symbol SM according to the Unified Soil Classification System. On the engineering use chart, the soils have a group symbol of SM. According to the Engineering Use Chart these soils are impervious, have good to fair shearing strength when it are compacted and saturated, low compressibility when compacted and saturated, and have good workability as construction materials which can resist erosion. The samples according to the aforementioned results suggest that it can be used in the construction of Earth fill dams.
