CHAPTER TWO
2 .0 LITERATURE REVIEW
The oldest mode of traveling obviously was on the foot paths. Animals were used to transport men and materials. Later simple drawn vehicles were ‘developed and this becomes a common and popular mode of transportation for a very long period after the invention of wheel. The first road on which there are some authentic is that of Assyrian empire constructed in 1900B.C. Only during the period of the Roman empire, road were constructed in large scale. Hence Romans are considered to be the pioneers in road construction and this gave birth to traffic operation system in every state of the Nation.
(Grace 2006) data of transportation ministry of transport in New South Wales, state government formalized its commitment to sustainability in transport by stipulating as one of its key priorities in the year 2006 state plan, its aim of increasing share of peak hour journeys on a safe and vehicle public transport system. This is to identify the following two targets.
Increase the share of trip made by public transport to and from the Sydney CBD during peak hours to 75% from 72%.
Increase the proportion of total journeys to work by public transport in the Sydney metropolitan region to 25% from 20-22%.
Considering the sustained and pervasive popularity of the private vehicle not only in Sydney but in most major cities, this objective presents a challenge. In 2004, public transport accounted for 102% of all trips made by Sydney residents on an arrange weekday down from 1991 when the level was 11 .9%. The private vehicle has been encroaching on this share capturing most of the decline in the usage of other modes to exhibit again in its share from 66.9% to 70.5% in the same period.
What makes people use or prefer the car more than public transport? What will facilitate the use of public transport? An understanding of the factors that influence mode choice is essential to the promotion of more sustainable behavior and the achievement of the states transport targets.
2.1 COMPARISON OF VEHICLE COSTS
Figure 1 illustrates the differences in vehicle cost from various modes. It shows how some mode (such as automobile) have relatively high fixed cost and relatively low variable costs least they are normally perceived while other modes such as taxi and cars hiring have minimal fixed costs but higher variable cost. Others are relatively low cost.
