3.2.3 Aggregate Specific Gravity Determination
The test was based on ASTM D 854-00 (2000) – Standard Test for Specific Gravity of Aggregate by Water Pycnometer. The experimental procedure is as follows:
Determined and recorded the weight of the empty clean and dried the pycnometer, WP. Then placed 120g of a dried aggregate sample in the pycnometer. Also, determined and recorded the weight of the pycnometer containing the dried aggregate, WPS. Added distilled water to fill about half to three-fourth of the pycnometer. Soaked the sample for 10 minutes. Applied a partial vacuum to the contents for 10 minutes longer, to remove the entrapped air. Stopped the vacuum and carefully removed the vacuum line from pycnometer. Filled the pycnometer with distilled (water to the mark), clean the exterior surface of the pycnometer with a clean, dried cloth. Determined the weight of the pycnometer and contents, WB. Emptied the pycnometer and cleaned it. Then filled it with distilled water only (to the mark). Cleaned the exterior surface of the pycnometer with a cleaned, dried cloth. Determined the weight of the pycnometer and distilled water, WA. Emptied the pycnometer and cleaned it.

WA = weight of pycnometer filled with water
WB = weight of pycnometer filled with water and soil
3.3: Concrete Mix Design
Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) concrete i.e. concrete with 100% OPC and ordinary gravel as control, and concrete with 25% - 35% POFA replacement and granite-gravel of 0% - 100% replacement having uniform water/binder (w/b) ratios of 0.5 and mixes ratio of 1:2:4 was adopted. Furthermore, curing ages of 7 days, 28 days, 56 days and 90 days were used. Table3.1 shows the mix design. To achieve objective 1 and 2, the study employed the use of design expert software. The used the software to determine the mix design and optimum mix ratio in terms of the compressive strength and slump height.
