2.2.0 FACTORS INFLUENCING THE SELECTION OF THE TYPE OF BASE AND SURFACING
The following are factor which mainly control the selection of type of base and surfacing in a road
i. Amount of traffic
ii. Type of character of traffic
iii. Nature of sub-grade soil
iv. Drainage condition
v. Equipment available
vi. Climate condition
vii. Availability of condition materials.
2.3 EARTH ROAD
This road is the cheapest type of road which is used where traffic is rather low. The pavement structure of this type of road is made totally from soil available at site in phase development or stage construction of road; in fact is the first stage of construction. The performances of the road mainly depend upon the effective maintenance and drainage.
Defective drainage system can spoil any type of road. To carryout effective drainage of the road, drain of adequate capacity is provided and also the surface of this road is given a step cross fall or camber. The camber provide rages between 1 in 20, 1 in 50 step cross fall helps in immediate drainage of rain water from the surface of the road and maintains is stability. It surface drainage is not proper the rainwater will percolate into the pavement and make it soft.
