    • THE MODERN (SCIENTIFIC) METHODS OF FAMILY PLANNING:
      The modern methods of contraceptive available are divided into two groups namely:-
      1.    Those not requiring medical supervision
      a.    Abstinence
      b.    Withdrawal
      c.    Barrier method
      d.    Natural family planning method
      2.      Those requiring medical supervision
      a.    The hormonals
      b.    Intrauterine conatceptive devices
      c.    Sterilization
      A.    ABSTINENCE:-
      This is the avoidance of sexual intercourse in order to prevent pregnancy. It is the most effective method of birth control with 100% effectiveness of practiced strictly and honestly
      B.    WITHDRAWAL (COITUS INTERRUPTS)
      This a method of contraceptive where by the penis is withdraw from the vagina just before ejaculation to prevent the sperm from being deposited inside the vagina.
      C.    BARRIER METHOD:
      These are method of family planning that creates a barrier between the ovum and the sperm. According to parks (2009), barrier methods have increase in popularity quite recently because of certain contraceptive and non-contraceptive advantages. The main contraceptive advantage is the absence of side effects that is associated with “pills and IUCD”, the non-contraceptive, advantages include protection against sexually transmitted disease, and reduction in the incidence of pelvic inflammatory dieses among others. Barrier method require a high degree of motivation on the part of the user. They are only effective if used consistently and carefully, in essence they are less effective than the pills or the loops.
      They are two types:
      1.    Mechanical (physical) Barrier
      2.    Chemical barrier methods
      1.    MECHANICAL (PHYSICAL) BARRIER METHODS: they are device worn by men or women and they consist of condoms, diaphragm and cervical caps
      CONDOMS:- This is a thin rubber that looks like a balloon that is worn over an erect penis before sexual intercourse to prevent the deposition of sperms into the vagina during ejaculation.
      DIAPHRAGM:- Is a done shaped rubber cap with a flexible metal rim that is inserted into the vagina to  cover the cervix before sexual intercourse. A spermicidal cram is added on it before introduction for added protection
      ADVANTAGES OF MECHANICAL BARRIERS   
      a.    They are easily available
      b.    Safe and inexpensive
      c.    Do not require prescription
      d.    Provides protection not only against pregnancy by also against sexually transmitted disease
      DISADVANTAGE
      a.    Reduced selectivity
      b.    Need predation before use 
      2.    CHEMICAL BARRIER CONTRACEPTIVE
      These are chemical substance placed in vaginal cavity before sexual intercourse it acts by killing or immobilizing the sperms that are deposited in the vagina during sexual intercourse.
      They are spermicidal agent. They include-foaming tables, creams and jellies
