DISADVANTAGES
- Delay in return to fertility if discontinues
- May cause amenorrhea and weight gain
- Must visit clinic every two or three month’s intervals
3. IMPLANTS: one of the recently introduced family planning methods. That are flexible capsules or rods that contain only progesterone. They are long lasting and can be replaced after 5 year. Their action in just similar to oral pills and the injectables. (Delano, 1990).
ADVANTAGES
Highly effective and long lasting for up to 5 years.
DISADVANTAGES
Not easily available and only specially trained doctors can administer and remove it.
F. INTRA UTERINE CONTRACEPTIVE DEVICE (IUCD)
These are objects made of plastic sometimes copper or hormones are added) which are in various sizes and shapes that are inserted into the uterine cavity to prevent pregnancy, it acts as a foreign body to the uterine cavity thereby preventing the implantation of the fertilized ovum.
TYPES
It come in two form viz:
1. Medicated types e.g copper “T†copper “7†and multi load
2. Non-Medicated types e.g lippes loop and saf-T-Coil
ADVANTAGES
1. It is highly effective
2. It does nor interferes with sexual intercourse
3. It is reversible
DISADVANTAGES
1. Increased chances of peluis inflammatory disease
2. Can causes cramps, spotting and heavier menstrual flow
G. VOLUNTARY SURGICAL CONTRACEPTIVE (STERILIZATION)
This is a permanent method of family planning for men and women who have decided to put an end to child bearing. It is done through minor surgical operation on a male of female to stop their abilities too have children
TYPES:- (a) Vasectomy- the cutting and tying of vas deferens (male tube) to prevent the passage of sperms into the make fluid (semen)
(b) Bilateral tubal ligation:- the cutting and tying of fallopian tubes to prevent the passage of ovum through the tubes to the unterus.
The cutting and tying of both the vas deference and the fallopian tubes prevents the sperm and the ovum form uniting to form pregnancy.
ADVANTAGES
- More effective than other methods
- Very safe with 99.9% effectiveness
- No fear of unwanted pregnancy
DISADVANTAGE
- It is irreversible
- It does not protect against sexually transmitted dieses
