2.3.2 BENEFIT OF FAMILY PLANNING
Jegede (2011) commented that ‘though child bearing is a natural process, it has it associated risks. It is known that maternal and infant mortality rate increase with extreme ages (<160r above 45 years).
Therefore family planning is intended to reduce these risk and improve maternal and infant healthâ€.
Koblinsky (2003), reported that family planning save lives of women and children improving the life of all!.
He further stated that “providing all women and men of reproductive age with a choice of contraceptive methods and counseling about how to use those method safe and effectively can have a significant, impact on the lives on their clientâ€.
According to Hobcraft (2011) contraception could prevent as many as 850,000 deaths per year among children under age five proving that children’s death are prevented through adequate spacing and prevention of birth among very young women and those with four or more children
Ajayi (1995) noted that the nutritional welfare of Nigeria’s children is precarious; many house hold are unable to provide adequate nutrition’s food for all family members, which leads to increasing malnutrition and subsequently placing children’s heath at risk. This can be cubed through proper spacing thus communities, in which people have smaller, healthier families are likely to have increase opportunities for participation in educational, economic and social activities
Spledel (1993) maintained that expansion, of family planning service will stabilize the wo rl’s population and help relive pressure that rapidly growing population places on social, economic and natural resources of community and nation as a wholeâ€. Each community can how adjust to the demand for health services, school, food supplies employment and transportation.
2.3.3 FACTOR AFFECTING CLIENT’S ACCEPTANCE OF FAMILY PLANNING
According to national health policy of 1994 on family planning “the method prescribed shall be compatible with people culture and religious belief†making culture and religion one of the factors affecting acceptance and utilization of family planning services.
According to Nwagoro (1965) the aim of marriage has largely been to procreate and have direct sexual activity according to accepted norms. He observed that our society being a religious community has strongly adhered to the teaching of both traditional and western religion which tend to encourage large families by abhorring the use of birth control. He further noted that based on biblical notion of increase and fill the earth†the Roman Catholic and other denominations are taught to reject artificial family planning method sicne it negates this aspect of the “creations is†theory on the same basis, the Islamic teachings which are more rigid than christen practice reject family planning.
This has coincided with Nwagoro (2005). Statement that “religion has a serious influences on the attitudes toward the acceptance, and practice of family planning therefore to the deeply religion rural me/women, family planning is ungodlyâ€. He further explained that “due to taboos and religious doctrines misinterpretation of family planning for they see it as a mean of terminating child birth which is nature’s fee gift.
Ukaegbu (1998) also agreed that “one of the cause of low interest of couples toward family planning is the belief that children are given buy good and should never be rejectedâ€.
