    • 2.7    Teachers’ profession and students’ academic performances
      The quality of instruction and subsequent success of students largely depends on the ability and readiness of the teachers to select and effectively match method and materials in the course of teaching.   Attitude as a concept is concerned with an individual way of thinking acting and behaving. It has very serious implication for the learner, the teacher, the immediate social group with which the individual learner relates and the entire school system. Learners draw from his teachers’ disposition to from his own attitudes, which may likely affect his learning outcomes. It is important to note that the various dispositions that our teachers display at work betray their devotion; this has greatly affected the attitude of students towards learning generally.
       Teachers’ affective reactions to work are not good as they should be in many of our schools. Yet, teachers are looked upon as instruments of social progress and change. Moshood (1997), noted that the teaching profession no longer attracts the skillful and ready-to–do people because of the low perceptions of the image of teachers in the country. Teachers deserve job satisfaction if they are to be effective and efficient. It is a common knowledge nowadays that many people take to teaching because they cannot get another job. Hence they take it is the last resort and remain “birds of passage” until they eventually get a more lucrative job. When this expected job is not forthcoming, they become frustrated and they are no longer committed to their job. Today, not many men and woman who are teachers in our schools know why they have chosen teaching as a career is no exaggeration. Many of them just find themselves in the four walls of the classroom without asking themselves why they have chosen to be teachers.
      2.8    Teachers’ profession and students’ academic performances
      A growing body of research shows that student performances is more heavily influence by teacher profession than by students’ race, class; prior academic record or the school a student attends. The benefits associated with being taught by a good teacher are cumulative, indicates that the performances gap widens each year between student with most effective teachers and those with least effective teachers. This suggests that the most significant gains in students’performances will likely be realized when students receive instruction from good teacher over consecutive years.
      Researches also show that these students produce the most gains when assigned to effective teachers. Indeed these finding have led many researchers and analysts to assert that the lack of good teachers is a major contributor to students’ academic performances.
          Research finding point to four key dimensions of teacher profession which include:
      -    Content knowledge
      -    Teaching experience
      -    Professional certification and overall academic ability
      It is important to note that there are individual teachers who are highly effective although they lack one or more of these qualities, just as there are ineffective teachers who have all of this qualities. But on average, the presence rather than absence of these qualities is more likely to produce effective teaching. Nevertheless, some researcher studies suggested that the effect of teacher experience is small compared to the effects of other three desirable teacher characteristic which are: teachers’ content knowledge, credentials and overall academic ability.
      Many studies demonstrate that students with certified teachers perform better than students with teachers who have no certification or emergency certification like the education degree just to stay on the job. Similarly, studies show that teachers who have professional education training or “pedagogy” produce higher student achievement than those who enter the profession and lack this background.        
      2.8    Appraisal of literature reviewed
      From the literature reviewed so far and on the basis of the theoretical framework examined, it can be seen that the teachers’ professional is to a large extent determines the students’ academic performance. Evidences have shown that standard of education has fallen despite the huge sum of money the government is investing in education. Examination malpractice, moral decadence and poor job performances are some of the indices of poorstandard of education in Nigeria. The review has shown that a lot of work has been done on quality control and quality assurance and how to maintain quality in the educational system. If a teacher is academically sound, professionally-competent and possess good character trait, he is expected to be able to discharge his duties effectively.     The importance of education was highlighted in this review; it is generally believe that education is the key that unlocks the door of success to modernization while the teacher is the person that holds the key to modernization. The review also looked at the   important roles of teachers in national development in general and students’ academicperformances in particular. The concept of students’ academic achievement was also looked at, as the parameter for determining the worth and carrying capacities of the students. In Nigeria, academic achievement of students is determined by various bodies, such as West African Examination Council (WASC), the National Examination Council (NECO), the National Board for Technical Education (NABTEB) and the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI)
      Conclusively, Teacher professional development and student Academic performances was looked at, there are benefits associated with being taught by a good teacher, research indicates that students’ academic performances gap widens each year between students with most effective teachers and those with least effectiveteachers.
