Accommodation or boarding services: the major benefits of boarding house
services particularly Nigeria is a multi-cultural and religious
diversity is that it promotes the meeting points for students from
diverse cultural, religious and ethnic background to learn how to live
and study together in unity. According to Edein (2000) the rationale for
providing electricity is of vital importance for the hostel,
laboratories, workshops, classrooms and even for security at night. This
also necessitates the need for provision of fire extinguishers in case
of emergency.
Recreational facilities: there are various recreational
facilities which the school should provide for the maximum comfort and
relaxation of the students after rigorous academic exercise such
activities according to Ogundele (2012) include games, sports,
gymnastics, music, art, dramatic activities, creative writings. The
provision of all these recreational activities will tend towards
improving students social interactions which will in turn facilitate
student Academic performance in the school ,
4. Student personnel services and student academic performance
Student support services are those vital services and activities which
are undertaken in the school system that contributes to students
convenient in the school there by promoting effective teaching and
learning. The responsibility of all the major stakeholders to make
furniture, fitting, books, consumables and non-consumable materials
available in the secondary school in order to enhance students’ academic
performance. The lack or inadequately of these student personnel
services in the school constitute another sources of obstacles for the
students which may lead to absenteeism, truancy and poor academic
performance of the students Dada (2003) refers to student as services
provided in the school system which can contribute maximally toward the
realisation of the goals of education.
Adebojeje (2000) define school
facilities as the essential material that must be put in place and into
consideration for the objectives of the school system to be attained.
He maintained that availability of these facilities determines the
quality of instruction and performance of student in the schools. He
most prevalent student personnel services in school are library
services, boarding/accommodation services, welfare services
recreational services transportation services, guidance and counseling
services and financial assistance services etc.
Hallak (2000)
maintained that student support services are a prime factor contributing
to academic performance in the school system. These include the school
buildings, libraries, laboratories, recreational. Facilities,
instruction, instructional facilities.
5. Emperical studies on student personnel services and student academic performance.
Olorunleke (2013) studied students’ personnel services and
students behaviour in the University of Ilorin. The researcher used
descriptive design of correlation type. One main hypothesis and four
operational hypothesis were used for the study. Operational hypothesis
were tested using pear son product moment correlation statistics at 0.05
level of significance. The findings revealed that there was significant
relationship between students’ personnel services and student behaviour
in university of Ilorin, Nigeria.
Ogundipe (2001) examined
student personnel services and internal efficiency of secondary school
in Atiba local government area , oyo state, Nigeria.
The
findings are : adequate provision of student personnel services and
effective utilization of such services is very essential to teaching and
learning activities and attainment of educational objectives.
Yusuf (2007) investigated students personnel services and students
unrest and academic goals achievement in south west Nigeria
universities. The research designed for the study. All the data
collected were analysed using descriptive and statistics, multiple
regression analyses statistics tested at 05 level of significance. The
result it of the findings shows that there is high significant
relationship between student personnel services and student unrest and
academic goals achievement of the universities in the south-west Nigeria
Adegoke (2001) examined institutional support services and student
academic performance in kwara state secondary schools, the study was a
correlation research designed five hundred respondents stratified
randomly selected. The data collected were analysed using pear son
product moment correlation statistics. The results revealed that
institutional support services like transportation, accommodation career
opportunities, feeding all have significant relationship with the
achievement of institutional goals
