Empirical Studies
Lots of studies have been carried out in an attempt to find out the relationship between parental involvement and student's academic performance. Few of these studies done in U.S. will be examined.
Daniel (2011), examined the association between parent-child communication, a form of parental involvement, and academic achievement by levels of parental education in 33 educational systems that participated in the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS). The results indicated a positive interaction of parent-child communication and parental education in 5 primary school systems (PIRLS). According to him, the interaction strength varies across educational systems, but no clear pattern emerged for national income indicators. Only weak evidence of a stronger interaction for lower income and higher income inequality was found, which could suggest that students reap greater rewards of parent-child communication when faced with an adverse national economic environment.
Jeynes, (2005) in his work entitled "The relationship between parental involvement and urban secondary school student achievement: A meta-analysis" undertook a metal analysis to determine the extent at which parental involvement can affect educational outcomes of urban secondary school children. He did statistical analyses to determine the overall impact of parental involvement as well as specific components of parental involvement. Four different measures of educational outcomes are used. These measures include an overall measure of all components of academic achievement combined, grades, standardised tests, and other measures that generally included teacher rating scales and indices of academic attitudes and behaviours. The results indicated that the influence of parental involvement is significant for secondary school children. He found out that parental involvement as a whole affects to a large extent all the academic variables under study. The positive effects of parental involvement as found by Jeynes (2005) hold for both White and minority children.
Also, Barnyak, & McNelly (2009) in a joint work titled " An urban school district's parent involvement: A study of teachers' and administrators' beliefs and practices" examined the practices and beliefs of administrators and teachers regarding parent involvement in an urban school district following the first year of the implementation of an action plan based on six national standards for parent involvement. The instrument used for this study was adapted from "The Parent Involvement Inventory" published by the Illinois State Board of Education in 1994. The results of this study shown a mismatch between teachers' and administrators' beliefs and practices about parent involvement. Although teachers and administrators have strong beliefs about parent involvement and its importance in strengthening student achievement, what they practice in their schools and classrooms is not congruent with these beliefs.
Appraisal of the Literature Reviewed
This chapter shows the work of many authors which are relevant to this study in the course of the review, the researchers considered and thoroughly looked into the work of various authors, scholars, educationist and researchers who one time or the other had studied into any of the variables of the identified for the study. Their findings, comments and observations were reviewed and reported. From the reviewed literature, finding and works, and insight was given into various definitions, concept and relationship among socio-economic status and academic performance
In the review, the researcher have tried to explain the concept of socio-economic status which are occupation, education and income as an important tool of academic achievement. It will be a very good option if the government can improve the parental socio-economic status, because this will lead to effective and high academic achievement in secondary schools.
