According to Jaiyeola (1990), students performance in geography is hampered by several factors which include: Overpopulation, lack of recommended books and other materials etc. He persist that effective teaching in geography could only be carried out in a conducive environment with manageable size of students performance in geography. He illustrates that ineffectiveness of teacher is as a result of large class, and this could negatively influence the students performance in geography.
In conclusion, class size along other learning interventions play a predominant role in students academic performance because small classes are associated with higher level of academic achievement across all grades at the primary and secondary level and the correlation between improved learning and class size became particularly important when class size were reduced to below 20 students according to Pritchard (1999). Other learning interventions such as pupil characteristics, grade level, subject areas and teaching methods also affects students learning outcomes in geography.
The foregoing differing findings, opinions and observations call for further investigation into the relationship between class size and student academic achievement particularly in geography; which this present study was out to do.
