Influence Of Family Background On Academic Performance Of Secondary School Students
[A CASE STUDY OF ILORIN SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA KWARA STATE, NIGERIA] -

On the distribution of respondents by gender, religion, parents highest education qualification, family size and parents employment type, the table reveal that 80(40%) of the total respondents are male while 120(60%) were female. It indicates that female respondents were more than the male. Also the table presents the distribution of respondents by religion the analysis shows that 127(63.5%) of the total respondents are Muslims while 73(36.5%) are Christian. The result shows that Muslims respondents more than the Christians. Equally, the table presents the distribution of respondents by parents’ highest educational qualification. The table shows that respondents who their parents are less than SSCE Certificate holder amounted to 30(15%) while the SSCE/NCE/OND Certificate holders are 96(48%). The number of respondents whose parents are first degree/HND and above certificate holder is 74(37%). This result revealed that respondents whose parents are SSCE/NCE/OND certificate holders are more than first degree/HND holder while less than SSCE holder are just about half of first degree/HND certificate holder counterparts.
Moreso, the table presents the distribution of respondents by family size. The result indicates that 93(46.5%) are 1 – 5 family members while 107(53.5) are above 5 family members this explains that the number of family size of above 5 members are almost twice the number of family size 1 – 5 members.
Moreover, on the distribution of respondents by parents’ employment type, the analysis shows that 3819%) of the total respondents are civil servants, 105(52.5) are self employed while 57(28.5%) are unemployed. The result therefore shows that the respondents whose parents are self employed constitute the highest frequency.
