Borg and Gall (1999) suggested that it is better for a researcher to discuss his or her findings from research on the basis of each hypothesis. The t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) statistical measures were used to test the five null hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The results showed that four out of the five hypotheses tested were accepted.
Hypothesis 1 stated that there is no significant difference in the influence of family background on academic performance of secondary school students on the basis of gender. The result of the t-test which was used to test the hypothesis revealed that the null hypothesis was rejected, hence there is significant differ in the influence of family background on academic performance of secondary school students on the basis of gender. This implies that male and female students are different in their view of influence of family background on academic performance of secondary school students. This result agrees with the findings of Ajiboye (2002) where gender significantly difference the respondents on their attitude toward family planning.
Hypothesis 2 stated that there is no significant difference in the influence of family background on academic performance of students based on religion. The result of the ANOVA used to test the hypothesis revealed that the null hypothesis was accepted. Thus, significant difference did not exist in the influence of family background on academic performance of secondary school student. The study of Alawaye (2006) equally established similar finding, that religion did not influence the expression of students (the respondents) on causes of examination malpractice. The major reason for similarity in the view of respondents may be traced to the fact that religion does not count in people’s view on family background because the major purpose is to live fulfilled life irrespective of religion. Thus, this study shows that people from different religions perceive students academic performance in similar perspective.
Hypothesis 3 stated that there is no significant difference in the influence of family background on academic performance of secondary school students on the basis of parental highest educational qualification. The result of the ANOVA revealed that the hypothesis was accepted. It indicated that there is no significant difference in the influence of family background on academic educational qualification. The result agrees with the findings of Akanni (2004) in which respondents perceived the family background on academic performance of secondary school students in Ilorin South the same way, irrespective of the disparity in their parents educational qualification. The reason for the similarly in their view may be due to the fact that educated persons have similar experiences because of opportunity to gather information. Individuals could read and can still go further to retrieve useful information about phenomenon through different methods. Hence, their methods of training children may look the same.
Hypothesis 4 stated that there is no significant difference in the influence of family background on the academic performances of secondary school students on the basis of family size. The hypothesis was tested with ANOVA and found being accepted. Hence, there is no significant difference in the influence of family background on academic performance of secondary school students on the basis a family size. These results however disagree with the findings of Ajiboye (2006) where respondents from different family size were different in their perception of prevention and control of HIV/AIDs.
Hypotheses 5 stated that there is no significant difference in the influence of family background on academic performance of secondary school students on the basis of parents’ employment types. The result of the ANOVA statistical measure revealed that the null hypothesis was accepted. This implies that student from various parental employment types. Have similar view on influence of family background on academic performance of students. This result is similar to the findings of Alawaye (2006) who established that students from different courses of specialization expressed the causes of examination malpractice in similar view. Thus, difference in the employment type may not really influence people’s view about others since such significant others are independent of respondents employment types endeavour.
Conclusion
Based on the findings of this study one may draw some basic conclusions. It is apparent that some factors in the family really have influence on academic performance of secondary school students. These basic factors include parental education qualification of students. It has a great influence on the children academic performance of secondary school students. It is also found that family size, home environment and media, contribute a lot to the students academic performance. This research study also showed the important of the family type on the academic performance of the children. Equally, it was established that variables such as parent educational qualification, religion, family size and parent employment types do not create difference in the view of students on influence of family background on academic performance. However, gender was a factor that created significant difference in the view of the respondents.
It is therefore imperative to note that those factors which influence family background on academic performance of students should be taken into consideration by guidance counsellors and significant others that may be involved in the process of educating the students. Also, it should be noted that variables such as religion, parental educational qualification, family size and parental employment type do not play significant role in creating differences in people’s perception of academic performance of secondary schools students.
