Effects of Premarital Sex
According to Adebayo (1976) a
Christian, beliefs that according to biblical injunctions that
premarital sex before marriage is a sin and that God promises to punish
those who engage in such act. He also emphasized that if during the act
of premarital sex and pregnancy occurs an unwanted child would be
brought into the world.
In the social point of view, premarital
sex can be regarded as a social vice that attracts negative stigma on
one’s personally. Sex resulting to an unwanted pregnancy may result in
ending the adolescent’s career by becoming a drop out. Also the
adolescent is prone to contacting venereal diseases or sexually
transmitted diseases (STD) such as syphilis, gonorrhea AIDS.
According to Ganiyu (2001) premarital sex is also regarded as adultery
(Zina) Zina can destroy marriage and family and bring illegitimate
children into the world without the benefit of a father’s support and
care. These children lack parental control and they find themselves
growing up with social problems. Moreover, Zina (Adultery) is the cause
of spread of venereal diseases and other dangerous diseases like AIDS.
This behaviour destroys the decent and respectable social standard which
Allah has sent to mankind from above, on the evils of Zina (Adultery).
It can be seen that it is not only a private sin but an offence against
the society like stealing or committing murder. It is therefore
considered not only a sin but a legal offence which is punishable under
the Shariah.
According to Allah’s injunction in Q24:2 “As
for the adulteress and the adulterer flog each of them with a hundred
strip and let not compassion for them keep you from carrying out this
law of Allah, if you truly believe in Allah and the last day, let a
group of the believers witness their chastisement.
According to a
study carried out by Robinson (1985) the religious attitudes of
students did not have direct influence on their sexual life. The work
was titled “premarital sexual activities among secondary school
students. It was found out that changes within the few years gap as in
1985, 40% of the female respondents opposed premarital sex while in
1970, 60% thought so.
According to Bamgbose (1988) sex education
has succeeded in exploring the most significant and important aspects
of life. It satisfies our needs to have information about pregnancy
natural emotion, homosexual and masturbation the use of artificial
insemination and reproduction without physical contact of man and woman.
Also Miles (1991) argued that to say that only girls with certain body
measurement can be sexy is about intelligence as saying that the colour
of a woman’s hair or skin would determine her sexual efficiency in
marriage. He stressed further that the real tools necessary for a
satisfying marriage sex like is within the couple’s mind and not their
sexual satisfaction during premarital time. Also the marriage success
depends largely on such Christian concept as character, love, concern,
felicity, trust thoughtfulness, tenderness, understanding cooperation
and balanced sex education.
Solution to Premarital Sex among Students
In order to eradicate the rate of premarital sex among secondary
school students the following points are to be put into consideration.
Education
or Compulsory Schooling: Education is a very vital element that will
help the parents to build their children and wards morally, physically,
spiritually and intellectually because education has a positive effect
in the moral and social upbringing of any student. Bakare (2006)
emphasized that the skills students acquired in school can be helpful to
them to succeed despite the challenges of today’s world. More so, a
good education may help them perform excellently well in their various
career choices.
Inculcate the Sense of Discipline and Respect:
Discipline is training that corrects the life of our children and it
includes communication. Discipline carries the thought of correction
move than punishment. Although punishment may come into the picture, the
children needed discipline when they were young and now that they are
teenagers, they will still need some forms of it, perhaps even more,
wise teenagers know that this is true because their parents are much
more experienced than they are.
Provision of Guidance and
Counselling Centres: The availability of guidance and counselling
centre, that will teach and orientate the students generally on sex
should be provided at all levels of education.
Correct and Adequate
Information: Adequate information should be provided mostly in secondary
schools and this could be done by well educated people in the society
Misinterpretation of information or irrelevant information may lead to
wrong attainment of information.
