    • Types of Impairment
          According to Onaolapo (2003), there are five main types of hearing impairement, these include the followings: -
      1.    Conductive hearing Impairement: -
          This impairement affects the outer and middle ear. In this type, sound waves are not conducted adequately to the inner ear and may be muddled up or not heard at all.
      2.    Sensori-neutral or Nerve hearing impairement: -
          This type of deafness affects the inner ear, sound vibration reaching the inner ear usually stimulate the nerve fibre so that they produce nerve impulses which are carried to a porbular centre in the brain where they are interpreted as sound. Sensori – neutral or nerve hearing impairement is a failure of this disruption.
      3.    Mixed hearing impairment: -
          This may be as a result or combination of conductive and sensori-neutral hearing losses, this means that both the middle and inner parts are affected.
      4.    Central hearing Impairment:
          When the pathways through which the nerves fibres travels from the brain stem to the special centre in the brain where nerve impulses are interpreted, sounds are blocked or damaged, deafness which is refers to as “central deafness” occurs.
      5.    Psychogenic hearing impairment:
          This is a personality disorder because the hearing impairment may have no organic cause and there may be no defect in the auditing mechanism. Psychogenic deafness may be a sign of emotional stress.
          In her classification, Bukoye, (2005) classified deafness into two major types namely: -
      1.    The congenital deafness or prelingual deafness.
          This occurs at birth, that is being born deaf or the deaf that occurs before birth when the child develops speech or language, but before the child could be termed deaf, he or she must be 60.75 decibels (drs) or 75 db.
      2.    The adventitious deafness or post lingual deafness:
          This occurs after the child is born with normal hearing but later, the sense of hearing could no more function effectively due to illness or accident. This could also be due to very high sound wave, e.g. noise from electric gadget, exposure to bomb, sound or guns and artilleries.
      Cause of deafness
          The causes of deafness as listed by Onaolapo (2003) are as follows: -
      1.    Infection of the canal from throat to the middle ear.
      2.    Inflamation of the middle ear.
      3.    Poor development of hearing mechanism
      4.    Maternal syphilis.
      5.    Birth injury
      6.    Loud sound, explosions and continuous loud sounds such as noise at the airports, factories etc may cause hearing lost.
      7.    A bony growth in the middle ear.
      8.     A damage to or perforation of the ear drum.
      9.    Execessive use of drugs
      10.    Rh factor, when the blood group of the parents of the child are different or incompatible.
      11.    Bleeding from the auditory nerve centre in the brain.
      12.    Prematurity, when born long before expected.
      13.    High fever – born with high fever which may result in hearing loss effectiveness.
      14.    Infectious diseases: - pregnant mothers infected with rubella, syphilis, mumps and influenza result to deafness of the baby.
      In another development, Bukoye (2003) itemized the following causes: -
      1.    Obstrcution in the outer ear due to excessive wax or foreign body in the eardrum
      2.    Accidents: - such as blows on the ears, head injury which has lead to damage in the eardrum.
      3.    Infection: Accute or chronic otitismedie. Thus can develop from colds measles and other infections of the whooping coughs e.t.c.
      4.    When the part of the ear called “stages” is prevented from moving due to a growth of spongy bone.
      5.    High fever
      6.    Hereditary hearing losses
