The physiological factors
The physiological factors are the major factors in sport performances such as proportions of fast twitch and slow muscle fibers, anaerobic capacity, maximum strength and functional flexibility (Singer and Orbach, 2001).
The above factors are mostly the result of genetics. Individuals are differing in their physiological and psychological makeup. Factors which are innate include flexibility, the proportion of muscle fibers types, reaction time, hand eye coordination, personality trait, V02 max and an aerobic capacity. Although all of the above mentioned can be improved by training, basic capability is determined by the genetic blue print inherited form parents.
However, it’s argued that environment determines the extent to which a person can fulfill the genetic potential (Edward, 2000) and as it is puts it
No one would claim that any body’s ability or performance
is caused purely by genetic factors or solely by environmental
factors or experiences. The end product is a combination of
both heredity and environment. However, the relative
contribution each makes to a person’s level of attainment
varies from one individual to other (p. 316)
Based on the above statements, performance is the product of heredity and to some extent, experience of the individual athlete even though the percentage of genetic contribution for best result is high.
Nutritional factors
Another factor for better result is nutrition. Nwabuewe (2007) defines nutrition as a science of nourishing the body. The athlete who is striving for excellence should train hard and to train hard should eat balanced diet and enough calories to cover the load and to maintain the body. Nutrients are chemical substances in food that function, to furnish the body with fuel, to build and repair body tissue (Nwabuewe, 2007).
Food is the fuel of athletic performance. Though the teacher cannot control the food your athletes eat, you can guide them toward healthy eating. To do so, he must be acquainted with the basic of proper nutrition. For example, during tournaments, the student athletes require fluids and carbohydrate throughout the day. Some athletes may be reluctant to eat and drink because they have to compete again. However, failing to refuel and replace fluid losses can cause their performance to deteriorate, particularly toward the end of the day. Bringing along a cooler packed with familiar high-carbohydrate, low-fat meals and snacks keeps athletes from them being dependent on the high-fat fare typical of concession stands. This will consequently influence their performance (Awosika, 2009).
Factors of equipment and facilities
Facilities are also the factors for better performance. If the adequate facility is available, the athlete may improve his/her level of performance. The many events of Athletes require numerous sporting equipment and facilities. It is important for athlete to be able to recognize and understand how equipment for the specific events works and impacts their performance.
The effective performance of physical education and sports programmes in secondary schools involves the determination, allocation and development of funds for the achievement of the school sports programmes. The programme requires a large amount of money every year. This is because facilities such as courts and pitches are constructed and maintained for the use of the students. Also equipment and supplies such as balls, nets, javelin, rackets, hockey sticks, bats, gymnastic and athletic (track and field) materials require either purchasing, replacement or repairs. Bucher and Krotee (2002) opined that facilities should be planned and constructed with an eye to the future. Too often, facilities are constructed and out-grown their use within a very short time. Most facilities constructed in our secondary schools are very difficult to expand or exchange. It is noticed in today’s schools, the increased population, rising school enrolments, city life, limited space, and skyrocketing labour and material costs, are all altering physical education and sports facilities and equipment production and management.
According to Awosika (2009), it might be impossible to achieve satisfactory results from students whose training facilities and equipment are inadequate or of sub-standard. The scarcity of physical education facilities, supplies and equipment constitute a big cog in the successful administration, organization and management of physical education and sports in Nigeria. Nigeria student athletes would have performed better if they have half of the facilities and equipment available to the Western World. It is noted that most of our athletes lack exposure to modern sophisticated sports/physical education infrastructural facilities and equipment for training. Igbanugo (2004) ascertained that athletes have been known to drop out of skip training because these things (facilities and equipment) are their non-exist or inadequate.

CHAPTER FIVE - [ Total Page(s): 1 ]CHAPTER FIVEConclusionSport in Nigeria has grown from its humble beginning as an entertainment and recreational pastime to a prominent phenomenon whose influences are felt in all facets of lives of citizens. It is a very useful tool for all-round development especially of the students. It is used in Nigeria to foster national unity and socio-cultural integration. It is one of the most important phenomena which cut across all human endeavours and ethnic divides. Its invaluable role in studentsââ ... Continue reading---
