This study explores the communicative significance of proverbs in Igbo discourse. It examines how proverbs are used to convey values, regulate behaviour, resolve conflict, and reinforce cultural identity.
Data were obtained through interviews, storytelling sessions, and analysis of literary texts. The findings reveal that proverbs function as powerful rhetorical tools that enrich speech, aid persuasion, and encapsulate community wisdom. Although their usage is declining among younger generations, they remain central to traditional communication.
The study recommends incorporating proverbs into education and media content to ensure their preservation.
