This study provides a detailed analysis of tone patterns in the Igbo language with emphasis on how tone distinguishes meaning and grammatical function. The research investigates high, low, and downstep tones, including their distribution across nouns, verbs, and complex constructions.
Data were collected from native speakers representing different dialects. The analysis demonstrates that tonal variation plays a central role in semantic clarity, and even minor alterations can produce significant meaning shifts. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of Igbo phonology and offers insights relevant to language teaching, orthography development, and speech technology.
