The Influence Of Social Media On Igbo Language Usage Among Youths

This research explores the impact of social media platforms on the use and perception of the Igbo language among youths. The study assesses how digital communication habits shape vocabulary choice, fluency, spelling patterns, and attitudes toward writing and speaking Igbo.
Data were collected through questionnaires and content analysis of online conversations across WhatsApp, Facebook, and TikTok. Results show a gradual decline in standard Igbo usage, increased mixing with English, and the emergence of new informal expressions.
While social media provides space for cultural expression, it also contributes to language shift. The study recommends intentional promotion of Igbo digital content to sustain interest among young speakers.
