This study examined “The Impact of Mentorship on Nursing Students’ Performance in Kajola Local Government Area of Oyo State” with a focus on how mentorship influences clinical skills, strengthens academic outcomes, and the challenges that limit effective mentoring relationships in nursing training institutions. A descriptive survey research design was used, and data were collected from 150 nursing students through a structured questionnaire arranged on a four-point Likert scale. The analysis involved frequency counts, percentages, mean scores and standard deviation, while MANCOVA was used to test the three hypotheses at a 0.05 significance level.
The findings revealed that mentorship had a strong positive influence on clinical performance, where 83.3% of respondents agreed that their confidence, skill application, clinical judgement and professional conduct improved under mentor guidance, with a mean score of 3.41 and standard deviation of 0.77. The study also showed that mentorship contributed significantly to academic performance, as 79.9% of students reported better motivation, improved study habits, stronger classroom engagement and higher grades, with a mean score of 3.35 and standard deviation of 0.81.
Furthermore, the study identified major challenges affecting mentorship, with 86.1% indicating constraints such as limited time, poor communication, staff shortages and a lack of institutional mentoring structure, reflected in a mean score of 3.47 and standard deviation of 0.73. The MANCOVA results showed significant effects in all three hypotheses (p < 0.05), leading to the rejection of the null hypotheses. The study concluded that mentorship is a crucial driver of nursing students’ clinical and academic success and recommended formal mentoring policies, mentor training, institutional support and regular programme evaluation to strengthen mentorship in Kajola LGA.
