2.13 PROGNOSIS
Mortality in people with diabetes and foot is offen the result of associated large vessel –arteriosclerotic disease involving the coronary or renal arteries(citation).
Limb loss is significant risk in patient with diabetic foot ulcer, particularly if treatment as been delay. Diabetes is predominant etiology for nontraumatic lower extremity amputatations. Half of all non traumatic amputation are a result of diabetes foot complications and the five year risk of needing contralateral amputation is 50%(citation).
In diabetes people with neuropathy, even successful management result in healing of the foot ulcer, the recurrence rate is 66% and the amputation rises to 12%
A study by chammas et al indicated that ischemic health disease is the primary cause of premature in patient with diabetic foot ulcer, finding it be the majoy source of mortality on postmortem examination in 62.5% of 243 dibetics foot ulcer patients. The study also found that in patient with diabetes foot ulcer, mean age of death from ischemic health disease as derived from postmortem examination was five year below that of controls. Patient with neuropathic foot ulcer were determine to have the highest risk of premature death from ischemic heart disease
