Char Formation
The result of the effect of concentration of flame retardant on the percentage char f ormation are shown on Table 9, Fig. 6 below. It was observed that only the sample retarded with triammonium orthophosphate have increased percentage char formation with an increase in concentration of flame retardants. The sample retarded with melamine have decreased in char formation for lower concentration s of 0.5 – 1.5(pph). Observed increase in percentage char formation were for samples with higher concentrations of 2.0 – 2.5(pph).
The samples retarded with tri ammonium orthophosphate showed a higher increase in char formation far more t han that of melamine in all the concentrations. That observation corresponded with the v ast literature [45,46] in the formation of char that is associated with phosphorus based flame retardants. In the fire chemistry, production of char during combustion i s in the condensed phase, and the char insulates the flame from the rest of polymeric material preventing penetration of burning.

ABSRACT - [ Total Page(s): 1 ]ABSTRACTThis work studied the effects of two flame retardants on the fire characteristics of flexible polyether foam samples. Various concentrations of two flame retardants melamine and tri ammonium orthophosphate have been successfully incorporated into flexible polyurethane foam. Results of the analyses carried out on the various foam samples showed that by appropriate incorporation of the two flame retardants, the flammability properties (After glow time (AGT), ignition time, flame duration t ...
