This study examines the impact of work-related stress on employee performance, using First Bank Nigeria Plc as a case study. In today’s dynamic and competitive business environment, workplace stress has become an increasingly prevalent issue, affecting not only the health and well-being of employees but also organizational productivity. The research explores key stress-inducing factors such as organizational climate, job characteristics, and personal vulnerabilities, and how these elements influence employee performance across different levels of the organization.
A mixed-method approach was employed, utilizing both primary and secondary sources of data. Primary data was collected through a structured questionnaire administered to a sample of 200 employees drawn from lower, middle, and upper-level cadres across selected branches in Ibadan. Secondary data was sourced from scholarly articles, journals, and relevant literature.
Findings suggest a significant relationship between work stress and employee performance, with organizational climate and job demands identified as major contributors to workplace stress. The study also highlights the role of personal challenges—such as work-life balance—in exacerbating stress levels. Based on the results, the study recommends proactive stress management strategies, including improved communication, employee support programs, and a more flexible work environment.
This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on occupational stress and provides practical insights for organizational leaders seeking to enhance employee productivity through effective stress management.
