-
This study investigates the patterns and motivations behind code-switching among Igbo–English bilingual speakers living in selected urban centres.
The research examines the social contexts in which switching occurs and the linguistic factors that influence speakers’ choices. Using interviews, natural conversations, and participant observation, the study analyses how age, education, occupation, and social networks shape bilingual behaviour.
Findings reveal that code-switching serves both communicative and identity functions, ranging from clarity of expression to social alignment. The study concludes that code-switching remains an important aspect of bilingual communication and reflects broader sociocultural changes affecting the Igbo language.
