    • INTRODUCTION

      1.1 Background of the Study

In the contemporary business environment, organizations are increasingly compelled to evaluate their competitive landscape by assessing internal strengths and weaknesses while responding proactively to external opportunities and threats. This strategic awareness enables firms to formulate and implement competitive strategies capable of sustaining performance in highly turbulent markets (Papulová & Papulová, 2019). The growing intensity of competition, coupled with rapid technological advancement, has significantly transformed customer expectations, leading to the emergence of a new generation of consumers with sophisticated and dynamic needs. Firms that are able to meet these evolving needs through innovative and customer-focused services often achieve higher levels of satisfaction and loyalty.

Competitive advantage is generally attained when an organization delivers superior value to customers compared to its competitors. According to Okechukwu, Ekwochi, and Eze (2020), superior customer value may manifest in the form of affordable pricing, enhanced service quality, convenience, reliability, or a unique combination of these attributes. Similarly, Hosseini, Soltani, and Mehdizadeh (2019) argue that firms achieve competitive superiority by aligning their offerings with customer expectations while maintaining operational efficiency and responsiveness to market changes.

The Nigerian taxi industry has undergone a major structural transformation due to the entry of technology-driven ride-hailing platforms. Traditionally dominated by informal operators and small-scale private drivers, the industry has become increasingly competitive following the adoption of e-hailing technologies (Johnson, Dunn, & Sack, 2020). Nigeria has emerged as one of the fastest-growing ride-hailing markets in Africa, largely driven by urban congestion, population growth, and increased smartphone penetration (Meagher, 2019).

Uber entered the Nigerian market in 2014, launching operations in Lagos State before expanding to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, in 2016 (Johnson et al., 2020). Subsequently, other international and local competitors such as Bolt (formerly Taxify), Oga Taxi, and Rida have entered the market, intensifying competition within the sector (The Africa Report, 2021). These developments have significantly altered the competitive dynamics of taxi transportation in Nigeria.

Uber Technologies Inc. operates a digital ride-hailing platform that leverages disruptive innovation, dynamic pricing, and the sharing economy model to deliver transportation services. The company’s competitive strategies in Nigeria include technology-driven service delivery, flexible fare systems, enhanced customer experience, and strong brand positioning (Mutai, 2019). Disruptive technological innovation, in particular, has redefined service standards in the taxi industry by emphasizing convenience, safety, speed, and reliability (Christensen, McDonald, Altman, & Palmer, 2018).

In Lagos State, Uber’s value proposition is centered on comfort, convenience, safety, rapid response time, and reliability. These value-added features have stimulated increased demand for ride-hailing services, especially in a densely populated and traffic-congested urban environment (Clayton, Dillon, Hall, & Duncan, 2020). However, the proliferation of similar platforms adopting comparable strategies poses a significant threat to Uber’s sustained competitive advantage. This situation necessitates continuous innovation and strategic repositioning to remain competitive in the evolving Nigerian taxi market (Gilbert, Hitt, Ireland, & Sirmon, 2019).

It is against this background that this study seeks to investigate the strategies for enhancing the competitive advantage of Uber taxi business in Lagos State, with particular focus on Uber drivers operating within the state.

      1.2 Statement of the Problem

The introduction of Uber into Lagos State has significantly reshaped urban transportation by improving accessibility, efficiency, and employment opportunities. Despite these benefits, Uber operations continue to face several challenges that threaten the sustainability of its competitive advantage. Regulatory uncertainties, safety concerns, and increasing competition from both international and indigenous ride-hailing platforms remain persistent issues (Adeyemi & Salami, 2021).

Uber drivers in Lagos often encounter challenges related to licensing requirements, regulatory compliance, and enforcement inconsistencies. In addition, safety risks such as passenger misconduct, fraud, and night-time security concerns affect driver confidence and service quality. Furthermore, income instability resulting from fluctuating passenger demand, peak and off-peak variations, and seasonal market changes has raised concerns regarding the long-term financial viability of Uber driving as a livelihood (Adeleke, Adebayo, & Lawal, 2022).

Rising fuel costs and vehicle maintenance expenses further erode drivers’ profit margins, thereby affecting service sustainability and competitive performance. With the increasing adoption of similar technological strategies by competitors, Uber’s ability to maintain its market leadership is increasingly uncertain. Consequently, there is a need to empirically examine the strategies that can enhance and sustain Uber’s competitive advantage within the Lagos taxi market.

      1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to investigate the strategies for enhancing the competitive advantage of Uber taxi business in Lagos State. Specifically, the study aims to:

      1. Identify the challenges facing taxi transportation services in Lagos State.

      2. Examine the extent to which the emergence of Uber has enhanced taxi transportation business in Lagos State.

      3. Determine the strategies that have improved and sustained the competitive advantage of Uber taxi business in Lagos State.

      1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to provide answers to the following research questions:

      1. What challenges are faced by taxi transportation services in Lagos State?

      2. To what extent has Uber enhanced taxi transportation business in Lagos State?

      3. What strategies contribute to the improvement and sustainability of Uber’s competitive advantage in Lagos State?

      1.5 Significance of the Study

This study will be of immense benefit to government agencies, policymakers, transportation regulators, Uber management, drivers, investors, and the general public. It will provide empirical insights into the challenges, opportunities, and strategic practices within the ride-hailing industry in Lagos State. The findings will support evidence-based policymaking and guide stakeholders in formulating sustainable business and regulatory strategies.

Academically, the study will contribute to existing literature on competitive advantage, platform-based businesses, and the gig economy in developing economies. It will also serve as a reference material for future researchers interested in transportation management and digital platform competition.

      1.6 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the strategies for enhancing the competitive advantage of Uber taxi business in Lagos State. The study is geographically limited to Uber drivers operating within Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State. Conceptually, the study examines challenges, competitive strategies, and performance outcomes associated with Uber’s operations.

      1.7 Limitations of the Study

The study was constrained by time and financial limitations, which affected the sample size and data collection process. Respondent reluctance and potential bias in questionnaire responses also posed challenges. Additionally, findings are limited to the selected study area and may not be fully generalizable to other states or countries.

      1.8 Definition of Terms
